Barranquilla is a large port city on the Magdalena River near the Caribbean coast. It is best known for its Carnaval, one of Colombia’s biggest festivals, but it also has riverfront walks, museums and a strong local food scene. It gets fewer visitors than Cartagena, which is part of its appeal. It forms part of the wider Caribbean Coast guide.
Carnaval
Carnaval de Barranquilla is the city’s defining event, with parades, music and dance over several days. Dates change each year, so check the official calendar and book early. Read our full Carnaval de Barranquilla guide and the festivals calendar.

Getting There and Around
The city has an international airport and is connected by road to Cartagena and Santa Marta. Taxis and ride apps are common. Confirm schedules and travel times locally, as traffic and road works can change them.
Safety
Use normal big-city precautions: keep phones and valuables out of sight, and use registered taxis or apps at night. See the safety hub.
