Laureles, Medellín: A Local-Feeling Base for Cafés, Food and Walking

Laureles is a residential neighborhood in western Medellín, across the river from El Poblado. It is flatter than much of the city, tree-lined and easy to walk, and it has a stronger local feel than the main visitor areas. Many longer-stay visitors and remote workers choose it for that reason. This guide helps you decide between Laureles and the other bases. For the city overview, see the Medellín travel guide.

What Laureles Is Like

The neighborhood is organized around circular streets and a central park area, with many cafés, bakeries and neighborhood restaurants. The street known as La 70 is the best-known stretch for bars and restaurants, and the area around Segunda Parque Laureles is a popular place to eat and meet. Because it is residential, it is quieter than El Poblado on most nights, though some streets get lively on weekends.

Why Choose Laureles

  • Flatter and easier to walk than hillside areas
  • Strong café culture, useful if you work remotely
  • More local restaurants and everyday life
  • Often better value than El Poblado, though prices vary by season and listing
  • Close to the sports complex and the metro line

Laureles vs El Poblado

El Poblado has more international restaurants, nightlife and visitor services and is the default base for short stays. Laureles is calmer and more local. Read our El Poblado guide and the Medellín lodging guide to compare. Solo travelers can see best areas to stay in Medellín solo.

Getting Around

Metro stations near the sports complex connect Laureles with the rest of the city, and taxis and ride apps are widely used. Check current routes and hours on the official metro site, as services can change.

Safety

Laureles is generally considered a comfortable area for visitors, but standard precautions still apply: avoid displaying phones and jewelry, be careful on quiet streets at night, and use registered taxis or apps.
