Where to base yourself #
Chapinero is the closest equivalent to Medellín’s El Poblado: dense with coworking spaces, cafés, and nightlife, the natural default for most nomads. Usaquén, a former colonial town absorbed into the city, offers a calmer, more residential alternative with its own charm and a well-known weekend market. La Candelaria, the historic centre, is worth visiting for its museums and colonial architecture but isn’t where nomads actually base themselves; it empties out and isn’t the safest area after dark. Climate, the real trade-off #
Bogotá sits at 2,640 metres and stays cool and often overcast year-round, genuinely different from Medellín’s mild, consistently warm climate. Pack layers and a proper jacket; this is not a beach-town wardrobe.
Getting around #
The TransMilenio bus rapid transit system covers most of the city cheaply, though it gets seriously crowded at peak hours. App-based rideshares (Uber, Cabify, Beat) are the standard choice for anything beyond a short TransMilenio hop, particularly given Bogotá’s notorious traffic.
Worth a day trip #
Zipaquirá’s underground Salt Cathedral (about an hour away) and the colonial town of Villa de Leyva (around three hours) are the two most popular escapes from the city, both genuinely worth the trip if you have a free weekend.
