Medellín’s fitness scene is dominated by two big chains, plus a handful of specialty options that have become genuinely popular with both locals and the expat community.
The two big chains #
Smart Fit is the budget-friendly, high-volume option: modern equipment, strong air conditioning, and multiple locations across El Poblado (Milla de Oro, Forum, Santafé) and beyond. It gets crowded during peak hours (6 to 8am and 5 to 8pm) and is fairly strict about membership, though day passes are available at the front desk for visitors who don’t want a full membership.
Bodytech is the premium alternative: fewer locations, higher price, but proper sauna and steam room facilities and a member base skewing more toward local Colombians than Smart Fit’s international crowd. Athletic, Bodytech’s lower-cost sub-brand, offers a more alternative, event-driven vibe (spin classes, weightlifting competitions) at more competitive rates, with two locations in the city.
Specialty options #
F45, the Australian-founded global HIIT franchise, has arrived in Medellín and offers the same circuit-training format familiar from other countries. Power Club focuses on CrossFit-style functional training with hourly classes and coached sessions.
What to actually expect #
Membership is generally flexible: monthly, annual, and often day-pass options exist across all the chains above, with payment by cash, card, or mobile transfer, and installment plans available for longer commitments. Read the cancellation terms before signing anything longer than a month; Colombian gym contracts can be less forgiving about early termination than what you might be used to elsewhere.
Outside the gym #
Medellín’s climate, mild year-round, makes outdoor fitness genuinely pleasant: running and cycling along the city’s Ciclovía routes (closed to cars on Sundays and holidays), outdoor group fitness classes in parks, and a growing CrossFit and boot camp scene. Parque de las Aguas and the areas around Parque Lleras and Provenza see regular informal running groups that welcome newcomers.
