What to Pack for Colombia: Quick Guide

Colombia’s packing challenge isn’t really about volume, it’s about range: a single trip can span hot Caribbean coast, cool Andean highlands, and humid jungle, sometimes within the same week.

The one non-negotiable: layers #

Pack for temperature swings rather than one climate. Lightweight, breathable clothing (cotton or linen) for the coast and lowlands; a warm layer (fleece or light jacket) for Bogotá and the highlands, which run genuinely cold, especially at night; a proper rain jacket regardless of which regions you’re visiting, since sudden showers are common across most of the country outside the driest months.

Footwear #

Comfortable walking shoes are the single most-used item on any Colombia trip, given how much cities like Bogotá and Cartagena reward walking. Add sandals for the coast and, if any hiking is on the itinerary (Cocora Valley, Ciudad Perdida, the Coffee Region), broken-in hiking shoes or boots rather than anything untested.

Health and sun protection #

High-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses matter more than travellers expect, since Colombia’s equatorial location means UV exposure is intense even on cloudy days, particularly at altitude in Bogotá or Manizales. Insect repellent is worth having for anywhere near the coast, Amazon, or jungle regions.

What you genuinely cannot bring #

Colombian customs restricts live plants, seeds, soil, and most fresh animal products (meat, dairy, fresh fish) for legitimate biosecurity reasons; don’t pack food gifts involving any of these. Bringing pets requires specific permits arranged in advance, not something to attempt casually.
